Depending on how the PDF was created, this can range from easy with inexpensive (or even free) software to extremely difficult using expensive editing software. Often, multiple file types, such as various kinds of text documents and various image files (including other PDFs) can be assembled directly into a single PDF without combining them into a single document first before exporting to PDF (I do a lot of this).Įvery now and then, one may need to edit a PDF that had been though to to be the final version. The most common PDFs are just final versions that are a snapshot of an original document created with other software. Often these forms are able to do the necessary calculations. Examples of those are downloadable tax forms that you can type the information into. PDFs can also be OCRed during their creation to make them more directly editable with PDF editing software.Īn example of PDFs that are supposed to be edited are the ones with fields that can be filled in. PDFs have advantage such as they can be viewed using a reader in any OS, they can be encrypted, password protected, be fillable forms, etc. PDFs can be created from scratch (not common but is still done since these are easily editable with the correct software) or be made from a document in another format that is exported to PDF. A PDF is basically a crossplatform image of a document. PDFs are far more versatile than just documents to be viewed only. It depends on how the PDF is created and what it's intended use is. I would go much further and say PDFs are not intended to be edited.
